Many a times in our lives we are surrounded by clouds of doubt we have on ourselves. The shiniest of personalities undergo this patch of grey. Its very often a question crosses my mind Should you do what you love.
Last night I was watching Olympics for a light family time and the answer flashed from unknown corners of my mind as I watched Aly Raisman win a gold.
Born in 1994 to a humble Jewish family of 3 siblings. She began gymnastics when she was two years old. Passion for this sports drove her career. In 2009 she competed at national championship in Dallas. She placed third in the all-around.
Her motivation led Raisman compete at the 2011 World Artistic Championship in Tokyo. She contributed with decent scores toward the American team''''s first-place finish. Individually, she placed fourth in the all-around. After this win, Raisman decided to become a professional athlete.
Raisman competed at the Olympics in London. She helped the American team (nicknamed the Fierce Five") qualify in first place to the team final. After working all her life to one dream of winning individual Olympic gold she was stuck on a tie with Aliya Mustafania of Russia, but lost the bronze in a tie-breaker and placed fourth due to a trivial rule. Her video review was requested and she was granted extra point making her win Bronze. This made her somewhat unsure about herself due to the fact that she thought she did really well. It pissesd her off. She started thinking that it''''s never good enough. Things didnt get any easier for her dreams from there on.
Post-Olympics In September 2012 she was injured during the Kellogg''''s Tour of Gymnastics Champions in Ontario, California. She fell while performing on the uneven bars and landed off the mats, bruising her knees. This was a huge setback for her. She continued her journey to be a professional athlete and never gave up on her training. As she started dreaming of participating in 2016 Olympics she had another setback. Her age was considered a barrier as she was older gymnast with injured knee. The coach and her best friend almost gave up on her not wanting her back in the rim. Best people in her life were arguing to settle her for bronze. Nonetheless Ms. Unstoppable went out to live her dream despite all odds!
During the first night of Women''''s Gymnastics competition 2016 Summer Olympics, she gave her performance of the life time. On the second day of competition, Raisman competed on vault, balance beam, and floor exercise in the team final to help secure the gold medal for the U.S. Raisman finished second individual 2016 Olympic All round earning her a silver medal. Her comments were, I knew I had more in me. I am a champion I knew it. I just had to prove it to myself.
Getting back to answer the question in the beginning. The answer is do it for yourself. It was not for family, friends, coach or failure behind her win. It was just pure herself. Her feat made me cry. Our present situation may not be a final destination. Loving what you do is a good start to a successful journey. Be yourself.
