Applying for a new CA State Driver’s License

How to get an CA Driver's License

To obtain a new CA drivers license, if you are over 18 follow the rules given below

 

·        Make an appointment and visit the DMV office.

·        Submit the completed original DL 44 or DL 44C form.

·        Pass the vision test.

·        Provide your full legal name.

·        Provide your legal presence and date of birth.

·        Social security  number must be provided.

·        Give you thumb print and picture will be taken.

·        Application fees should be paid.

·        You should pass the traffic laws and sign test. Sample Test is available. 

·        Driving test can be taken only with appointment(s).

         

When will you get the Driver's License

          After passing the test, you will receive the license with photo by mail. Until then interim license will be issued which is valid for 60 days.

Moving from another state

          If you are moving to CA from another state, notify DMV of an address change within 10 days. In order to apply for an CA driver’s license follow standard steps as in CA driver’s license.

Renewing a CA State Driver’s License

How to renew your License

You are supposed to renew your driving license prior to the expiration at a DMV office. Remainders will be mailed to you before two months prior to the expiration date.

·        Make an appointment and visit the DMV office.

·        Pass the vision test.

·        Application fees should be paid.

·        Give you thumb print and picture will be taken.

·        Submit the completed original DL 44 or DL 44C form.

·        If your renewal notice says that you should take a written test, then you must take a written test which includes traffic laws and sign test.

·        Before leaving the DMV office, check whether your address is correct.

After passing the test, you will receive the license with photo by mail. Until then interim license will be issued which is valid for 60 days.

Serving in the military?

If you are a military service person, you should

·        Provide a copy of your military id card, proof of your Social security.

·        Fill in and sign the Driver License or Identification card application.

·        Application fees should be paid.

·        Copy of your Leave and Earnings Statement which shows CA as your home of record must be provided.

How to get a CA state ID card

CA state DMV office issues two types of ID card. One is a regular ID card which will be valid for six years and another one is senior citizen ID card which will be valid for 10 years.

 To apply and get an ID card, you must

·        Make an appointment and visit the DMV office.

·        Submit the completed original DL 44 or DL 44C form.

·        Give you thumb print and picture will be taken.

·        Provide your legal presence and date of birth.

·        Social security  number must be provided.

·        Application fees should be paid.

 

Before leaving the DMV office, check whether your address is correct and your new state ID card will be mailed to you within 60 days.

Replacing a Lost Drivers License

To replace the lost or stolen license, you must  

·        Make an appointment and visit the DMV office.

·        Submit the completed original DL 44 or DL 44C form.

·        Give you thumb print and picture will be taken.

·        Application fees should be paid.

·        Duplicate fee for Class C Driver License.

·        Duplicate fee for Fire Fighter restricted noncommercial Class A or B driver license.

·        Duplicate fee for Commercial Class C driver license.

·        Duplicate fee for Commercial Class A or B driver license.

 

Before leaving the DMV office, check whether your address is correct and your new driver license will be mailed to you within 60 days.
