11/6/1951Judge M. Patanjali Sastri became the Chief Justice of India. He helded this office till 03/01/1954.
6/7/1996Sq. Ldr. Sanjay Thapar of IAF becomes the first Indian to jump from a parachute and hoist the national flag at the North Pole.
12/28/1931The second round of a British-Indian conference on the political future of India collapsed in disagreement over demands by Indian nationalists for complete independence. The British government had seemed willing to grant a limited dominion status. But Mahatma Gandhi, who had come to the conference to present the demands of the All-India Nationalist Congress, refused to accept anything less than complete independence. The breakdown of the talks set off a new round of disorders, Gandhi was greeted by rioting in the streets of Bombay between upper-caste Hindu members of the Congress party and ""untouchable"" caste members who had turned against him.
4/15/1948Purushottamdas Tandon was honoured with the title of 'Rajashri' at a huge rally by Devaraha Baba. He was awarded the Prestigious 'Bharat Ratna' award.
9/19/1950U. N. Assembly rejects Indian-Soviet proposal to admit Communist China in New York.
5/25/1965Independent India had further clashes with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971, one over the intractable Kashmir dispute and the other over Bangladesh. A border war was also fought with China in 1962 in the North-Eastern region, which resulted in the loss of Aksai Chin in Ladakh and smaller areas in the North-east. India continues to dispute sovereignty over these areas.
