Firstly, three underground nuclear tests at Pokhran Range in Rajasthan, which included a hydrogen bomb, were tested; secondly, the successful test firing of the 'Trishul Missile' and thirdly, the maiden Certification test flight of 'Hansa-3', the first-all Composite indigenous two seater aircraft.
6/7/1631Begum Mumtaj Mahal, wife of Shah Jahan, Emperor of India, passed away at Burhanpur a few hours after the birth of a daughter. She was married in 1612 and the Taj Mahal was built for her.
5/23/1947The U.K. Cabinet today took the historic step of agreeing to Lord Mountbatten's proposal for the partition of India into two states, one Muslim and the other Hindu. The Viceroy is to have a series of talks with Lord Listowel, the Secretary for India.
5/18/1973A powerful underground explosion rocked India's desert of Rajasthan today, making India the sixth nation in history to set off a nuclear device. The blast, which took place at a depth of 330 feet, was in the range of 10-15 kilotons, smaller than the bomb exploded by the US at Nagasaki in World War II. India is signatory to the 1963 test ban treaty, and thus was prohibited from exploding the device on land or in the air. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi claimed the purpose of the test was peaceful and said 'such explosions may have their use in mining operations'.
3/16/1945Ganesh Damodar Savarkar, who was a revolutionary and brother of Swatantriya Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, passed away.
2/6/1952George VI (1895-1952), King of the United Kingdom, died of lung cancer at the age of 56 (succeeded by daughter, Elizabeth II). In 1947, His title of Emperor of India was deleted.
