Pakistan launched Operation 'Grand Slam' in Chhamb sector aimed at Akhnoor in Jammu. Indians had battled Pakistanis in air and on ground at Kashmir.

7/6/1986Babu Jagjivan Ram, valiant freedom fighter, passed away. He held many prominent ministerial portfolios such as Communication Minister (1952-56), Railway Minister (1956-62), Food and Agriculture Minister (1967-70), Defence Minister (1970-74). After 1977, he became the Deputy Prime Minister (Defence) in Janta regime. Thereafter, he established Congress (J). His uninterrupted representation in the Parliament from 1936 to 1986 is a world record.(5-4-91).

9/7/1906Bank of India, the first Indian bank, was registered.
3/17/1999An international seminar on UN Peacekeeping was co-jointly hosted by Ministry of External affairs and Ministry of Defence at New Delhi from 17 to 19 March 1999. The seminar was conducted by HQ Army Training Command, Shimla on behalf of the Indian Army. A total of 126 foreign delegates from 71 countries participated in the seminar.

10/13/1998Salman Khan, Hindi film actor who was arrested on charges of killing protected wild animals near Jodhpur, is remanded to the custody of the Forest department.

12/12/1971The first aerial victory was when MiG-21FLs of No. 47 Squadron shot down a PAF F-104 over the Gulf of Kutch and this was followed by three more victories in quick succession on 17 December, when MiG-21FLs of No. 29 Squadron escorting HF-24 Maruts, shot down intercepting F-104s near Uttarlai in the Rajasthan desert in gun-missile encounters, while a third F-104, on an intruding mission, was shot down by another MiG 21FL of No.29 Squadron.
