Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1A) launched. First operational multi-purpose communication and meteorology satellite procured from U.S.A.(Cape Canaveral).

6/22/1991M. Karunanidhi, DMK President, resigned from the Assembly.
10/10/1993Helicopters along with the last batch of personnel were ferried out in an AN-12 from Delhi to Mogadishu. These helicopters were provided by 111 HU.
12/7/2000A five-member ULFA group guns down 26 non-Assamese people, mostly Hindi and Bengali-speaking, at Sonpura near Arunachal Pradesh Border in Upper Assam.

4/29/1979Raja Mahendra Pratap, great revolutionary freedom fighter, passed away in New Delhi at the age of 93.
6/1/1790A treaty was signed between Marathas, Britishers and Nizam.
4/12/1799The Church Missionary Society was organized in London under the original name of the Society for Missions in Africa and the East. This Anglican missions agency currently works in fields located in Africa, Ceylon, India, Pakistan, Iran and Palestine.
7/18/1909Vishnu Dey, Gyanpeeth awardee and famous Bengali poet, was born.
4/9/1965Fighting breaks out in the Rann of Kutch between Indian and Pakistani troops. Pakistan attacked Indian borders, Sardar Post, Chhar Bet and Beria Bet, this was manned by the State Armed Police Batallions. In Kutch launched its 8th Infantry Division supported by two regiments of M47/48 Pattons. Operation 'Desert Hawk' was launched to draw away reserves from other vulnerable areas, and possibly to test India's resolve. The Indian Army did not rise to the bait.
