Balochistan: In the Crosshairs of History (Book Review)
The year began on a subdued note with the assassination of journalist and activist Karima Baloch, one of Balochistan's few, fiery and brilliant women freedom fighters. Her dead body was found in a lake in Toronto, Canada. The death is strongly alleged to be that of the Pakistani deep state. It, however, did not ignite international passions as the farmers' protests in democratic India did, for example. Yet, this was not a one-off assassination. It was part of a broader pattern of continuous death, destruction and dispossession of an entire community by the very state that is meant to protect and ensure their rights. Just in September another Baloch female journalist was killed, her perpetrators went scot-free.

Markets under pressure, expect more consolidation (Market Watch)
Markets were under pressure last week and the bull tide seemed to have turned the corner on Tuesday itself. BSESENSEX rose from the previous day's close of 52,154 points intraday to a high of 52,516 points and then fell to close at 52,104 points, a loss of 50 points compared to the previous day. The fall from the high was 412 points. This broke the momentum of the markets and they fell for the next three days, and even wiped out the sharp gains registered on Monday of over 600 points. Similar was the case with NIFTY as well.

Markets critically poised with imminent correction (Market Watch)
Markets continued to gain ground in the week gone by, but significantly lesser than the previous week. They were up on three of the five trading days and lost on two days. However, on three of the five trading days, markets were sideways and more than sixty per cent of the week's gains came because of Monday alone. This clearly shows that markets seem to be running out of momentum and are seeking a reason to correct. Further there have been many an occasion when they spend their time recovering lost ground during the day. All of this suggests an impending sharp correction sooner than later. When? Is the million-dollar question and I am quite sure the exact date is not yet ascertained. Suffice to say we are there, and it could be just any day hereon.

Disengagement at LAC: Decoding China-India moves ahead (Opinion)
China and India have announced the disengagement of troops along Line of Actual Control (LAC), at the southern and northern bank of the Pangong Tso Lake having commenced since February 10. It seems to be a positive step to mark the beginning of a possible end of one of the longest stand-offs, which had tremendous financial and human cost to bear, due to 'LOCisation' of the LAC, in harsh winters. A compulsion to get into some mutually acceptable solution, out of numerous negotiations at various levels is understandable, as stretching the standoff beyond a point was serving no useful purpose. The actual worth of announcements will be seen in implementation stage, in view of trust deficit and past track record of Chinese in junking agreements, when it suits them, as the LAC as well as border remains undemarcated between both countries.

A cause for concern (Column: Spy's Eye)
In a situation where the dividing line between a democratic protest and a planned attempt by the opposition to use street agitation for bringing down an elected government was getting blurred, the events of the recent weeks call for a deep examination of whether forces inimical to India were fishing in troubled waters to cause internal destabilisation here -- in furtherance of the 'proxy war' that had been conducted by them against India over the years.

India Union Budget - Clean & Conservative but?
Most of us awaited Indias Union Budget 2021-22 for its fiscal policy strategy to support growth, as the economy slowly emerges from the pandemic. Given previous episodes of shortfalls in realized receipts and rising off-budget expenditure, one was also ready to calculate 'more likely receipts and the 'true fiscal deficit. As mentioned in our previous note (link), the budget was a pleasant surprise as it estimated tax revenue conservatively, unlike recent years and vs. expectations this year. It also took a firm step towards reducing the rising off-budget financing, and has started repaying corresponding dues, by directly funding these through the government balance sheet. This enhances transparency but has also increased the budget size well beyond most of our estimates.
